Apply for funding to develop scripts by Nova Scotian writers for film and television: Screenwriters Development Fund

Production companies can apply for funding from the Screenwriters Development Fund to develop scripts by Nova Scotian writers for film and television. You need to apply by 21 June 2024 or 18 October 2024.

The Screenwriters Development Fund helps:

  • create and develop film and TV scripts by Nova Scotia filmmakers
  • strengthen the film and TV industry by developing Nova Scotia filmmakers, writers and producers
  • support diversity, inclusion and gender parity

Funding amount

The Screenwriters Development Fund may fund up to 50% of eligible costs to a maximum of $20,000 for each project. The applicant needs to fund the balance of the costs.

Eligible project costs and activities

Eligible project costs and activities include:

  • writer fees
  • producer fees
  • rights (options fees) for literary material
  • research or travel expenses
  • story editors and script consultants, including equity, diversity and inclusion consultants
  • screenplay workshopping
  • demo reels and pitch materials

Ineligible costs include:

  • non-scriptwriting travel expenses
  • living expenses
  • ongoing annual operational expenses
  • capital expenses
  • ineligible projects and productions (news, current events and public affairs programming, talk shows, sports event or activity, reality tv, pornography and adult entertainment, advertising, console and online video games, software programming platforms and video distribution platforms)

Eligibility

Production companies can apply for funding if:

  • production company (or producer) is registered with Registry of Joint Stock Companies
  • producer and writer have a primary residence in Nova Scotia (for at least 12 months before applying)
  • production is new and at least 30 broadcast minutes in length

The fund is open for applications 2 times per year. You need to apply by 21 June 2024 or 18 October 2024.

  2. Contact the Screenwriters Development Fund to discuss your project idea and confirm your eligibility.
  3. Complete the funding application.
  4. Check the application for details on all required supporting documents.
  5. Complete the budget template.
  6. Send your completed application, supporting documents and budget template by email.

How long it takes

It should take 3 to 4 months for the program to review your funding application and let you know if your funding application is approved. It can take longer if more information is needed or if your application hasn’t been filled in correctly.
